Learning Objectives

During this course, the learner will:

    Understand and locate tenses, forms of verbs, passive and active voices, question tags, prepositions and the like:

  • Be taught to read a passage and understand what is relevant and what is not
  • Get a comprehensive idea about writing for a wide variety of business contexts
  • Understand range of vocabulary that can be potentially used, according to each context, such as formal presentations and daily conversations

Course Coverage

1. Grammar

(Duration: 120 minutes)

  • This module will focus exclusively on forms of grammar. This ties up directly to all the other modules as well. Since having a good grasp of grammar is key to reading, writing and vocabulary. The learner will be taught to understand and locate tenses, forms of verbs, passive voices and active voices, question tags, prepositions and the like.
  • Assignment – Exercises on grammar – Ensuring the sentences are in the business context so that the learners can understand and relate.

2. Reading

(Duration: 120 minutes)

  • This module will cover a wide range of topics, from reading simple comprehension passages to reading emails, memos, manuals, proposals, as well as company profiles. Reading techniques such as scanning and skimming would also be touched upon. Through the module, the learner would be taught to read a passage and understand what is relevant and what is not.
  • Assignment – Have the learners read and record the audio of having read a newspaper article or a product manual for 3 minutes continuously. The aim is to check their fluency and diction.

3. Writing

(Duration: 120 minutes)

  • This module will focus on a range of topics, such as how to write an email in polite, Business English, understanding forms, writing structured emails to colleagues, superiors and customers, writing minutes of meeting and notes. The participants should get a comprehensive idea about writing for a wide variety of business contexts.
  • Assignment – Have the learners write emails to a colleague, superior and customer. The aim is to check the structure, usage of words and grammar.

4. Vocabulary

(Duration: 120 minutes)

  • This module would focus on vocabulary and the learner should be exposed to a range of both formal words and their spellings that will prove to be practically useful while in the business world. The learner should get an idea of the range of vocabulary that can be potentially used, according to each context, such as formal presentations and daily conversations.
  • In session exercise – Have the learners come out with five unfamiliar words that they have encountered in their workplace – either through emails, meetings or any other interactions at the workplace.
